The Gates of Sipeos

Post by xeanos on Tue Jun 18, 2013 8:40 am

Drowned in sweat- a small group of Refugees make themselves known by waving their hands at Sipeous' gates. It is a small group of say ten to thirteen humans. They all look injured, starved and without hope. Wounded swell on carts, large fresh wounds on their bodies and lost limbs hanging off the back of the carts.

The Leader speaks out in a hoarse, desperate voice- you can hear his tongue and spit clinging to his mouth. His voices laps a few times in fear, of both the walls and what is chasing them,

"Let us in! Please, please, please! Let us in! The-They'll get us, they'll enslave us! Please, they destroyed our villages! Please, let us in!"

"Despotēs Hephaestus!"

A watch commander under several blankets groans, swiftly tossing his blankets aside. Dressed in tons of layers of wool, he stumbles upwards out of his bunk, a watchman frantically calling his name from somewhere outside of his room. He fumbles around for his steel helmet and brass plate armor, swinging his small bunkroom's door open and shuffling out in night clothing.

"Despotēs Hephaestus!"
"I'm coming, damnit!"

Out from the barracks, he climbs a set of stairs to a long row of walls, approaching the huge gatehouse and rallying troops around him. Soon, him and thirty soldiers look down upon the desperate set. He scans them briefly, asking for minutes, and then calling out to the gatehouse manager.

"Open the portcullises! Plug the murder holes!"

Soon, the massive metal gates are reeled upwards and met by a group of ten heavily armed Cataphractoi, up upon their armored horses. They stare down at the group, their swords holstered and their lances upwards.

The Refugees look terrified, they turn their frail heads to the rising dust storm behind them- You see their hands wave in terror, streams among the women and children. The leader pleads that you gain him enterence. He cries out, echoing against your high walls and points into the coming dust-wave.

Your troops can see what they where talking about. Burly, blood stained, well-traveled Mounted Orc troops follow. Easily, about fifty Orcs, They ride strange lizard beasts that easily transverse the desert twice as fast as any horse. Ten carry heavy cross bows. Forty carry iron bastard swords. The Orcs let out a terrible war-cry.

The Leader of the Refugees turns once more to plead- they are cut short by a bolt through his chest...

The Orcs run straight for the villagers, you could spot their eyes- their objective is, what appears to be, strictly the refugees.

"To the walls! To the walls! Heathens, demons! Sound the alarm! Gia tous toíchous! Entolés Heaven! Gia gioúta, sto Theó!"

A massive bell begins to ring, drawing out the entire garrison of soldiers.

Quickly, the Cataphractoi spring to action and draw their swords, riding out with their armored horses to meet the enemy while footmen usher the refugees in. From the murder holes and arrow slits, a barrage of rocks, oil, and arrows rain upon the Orc charge.

Three of the Orcs from the back of the pack quickly break off and run into the winds that they came from. The rest, keep the charge- Instantly, Orcs fall off one by one. Blood splurges from new wounds, the Lizard-beasts lose their cool and many of the strange mounts start to attack their masters! This total confusion causes some Orcs to completely start to attack one another. Bizarre.

In the choas, a sand cloud appears- The dusts block the sight of the towers but, the arrows seem to do their job and no sounds of Orcs can be heard. When the dust clears all that remains is a small grave yard of barren, beaten and Orc corpses.

The refugees attempt to run at the guards in a non aggressive manner and kiss them. They seem so great-full, tears flood from their eyes and children hug their parents. Some refugees completely break into dance, the traders on the carts playing light songs for them to dance to with home-made instruments.

The soldiers sheathe their swords, allowing the embrace of the people on their armor. Soldiers continue to watch the night, several exiting the safety of the walls to kill the wounded orkfolk. A man in a massive suit of armor and with jewels outlining his helmet rides up to meet the refugees, his cold voice sputtering from his close helmet. The soldiers who were embraced rush to stand at attention, a trumpet sounding from the walls.

"I am Synoriofýlakas Xenocrates. State your names and your business within the Illustrious Empire of Sipeos."

The surviving Orcs wait.

Their comrades rot and bleed above them- brave sacrifices for the ambush.

The sound of horses draw near,

They get ready.

The leader of the refugees cries out- the pleasure still stuck to his face like glue. He speaks in a strange accent. His eyes burn with rage; memories of the Orc assault.

'The Orcs came into our town. They took slaves and burned down our homes. The Orc King took slaves, he took everything.' - The Refugee leader starts to blabber- tears roll down his cheeks - 'Th-they, the-they spoke of Elves and trying to put an end to them- they seemed so desperate- they, they tried to kill of us who ran'

Suddenly, without warning; the corpse cart shudders in movement. Diseased green liquid flows over the bodies. Hands reach out and pull off the covers. Molten fleshed faces stare- Their eyes are dull. A veteran could recognize these eyes. Eyes of the blighted.

"They've got the plague! Shut the portcullises! Alert Pios!"

The fifteen men outside try to ride back to the portcullises, about five making it into the walls. The portcullis falls on one cataphract and his horse, impaling him and trapping the armored horse under him.. The nine others stand outside, their swords drawn as the Blighted rise from the wagon. The watch commander lights a fire in the gatehouse tower, soon signalling the entire garrison once more. Bells begin to ring, and the city of Pios is seen lighting similar signals in chapels and monasteries, only a distance away. Crossbowmen take up arms on the walls, and a troop of fifty footmen rush the crossbowmen's sides from the barracks nearby.

The corpses of the Orcs short of the gate fly to the right and under them stands several surviving Orc soldiers.

The Orcs take one look at the blighted- fear doesn't take them- Rage does. Teeth growl, eyebrows tighten and arms raise. The Orcs charge mercilessly at the Blighted obviously, having no idea what the illness does or is.

A leader stands behind the Orcs, furiously screaming at them to fall back and to ignore the blighted. He persists that they should attack the Sipeans. The Orc leader suddenly feels small, only two or three of his Orc troop listened to him and they stand beside them. He stares at the walls with a fade of hope.

Was this his end?

Suddenly, a huge barrage of bolts and arrows rain down on the ground outside of the wall, peppering the orcs, corpses, and Blighted much like rain. The archers and crossbows draw again, repeating the process.
